14th Anniversary of The Million Dollar Homepage which sold a Million Pixels
A Unique Website Created to Rise Fund for Education by a Student
The Homepage consisted with 1000 x 1000 pixels and $1 per pixel (10x10 blocks). In the beginning it took 3 days to sell its first pixel and later Tew's friends and family members had purchased a total of 4700 pixels. After few month of struggles, The Million Dollar Homepage was ranked 3rd in Alexa Internet's list of Movers & Shakers.
On 1st January 2006, the last 100 pixels, was auctioned in eBay, within 10 days the highest Bids amount received was $160,109.99 but unfortunately it was retracted by bidders or canceled by hoaxes. Finally the winning bids was $38,100.
It took five months to made $1 million by selling Million Dollar Pixels.
Soon after the boom of Million Dollar Homepage, many copycats were started to sell pixels by seeing the huge success Tew's Million Dollar Homepage but no one reach the height of Tew's homepage.
As per Wiki on April 2019, approximately 40% of the site's links were found suffering from link rot like site dead / unavailable.
